The journey to Pong Horse Park, nestled in the mountains, was more challenging than expected. The first taxi driver cancelled upon hearing it was a one-way trip, and the second quoted 500 baht for a round trip - quite steep for a 168-baht distance. Finally, on the third attempt, I managed to secure a ride. As we climbed the mountain road, I understood the distance better, and when I gave the driver 200 baht including tip upon arrival, he finally showed a bright smile.

First Encounter with 'Happy'

Arriving 15 minutes early gave me time to explore the surroundings, and I could immediately tell it was worth the cost. After receiving well-maintained helmet and boots, I finally had my first encounter with a horse. My companion for the day was named 'Happy' - though initially intimidating, he turned out to be gentler than expected. While I was nervous about my first-ever horse riding experience, I was relieved to find that Happy was quite obedient.

Trail Riding Challenge

The instructor told me to kick with my left foot, but I hesitated at first, worried about hurting Happy. However, as Happy moved at an extremely slow pace, I eventually found myself kicking harder under the intense sun. The one-hour session, including trail riding, was truly special. The instructor kindly took photos and videos, helping me capture unforgettable memories, and even complimented me on my riding skills as a beginner.

Wrapping Up and a Special Encounter

After the session, when asked if I wanted to feed the horse for 50 baht, I naturally agreed. Though it felt like a sales tactic, I wanted to show my gratitude to Happy for carrying me. On the return journey, with no economy taxis available, I used Bolt for the first time. The driver initially asked for 300 baht, but we settled on 250 baht. Surprisingly, the fare was well worth it - he was incredibly friendly and entertaining, chatting in English, recommending restaurants, and even taking me to the Old City instead of Suthep while sharing local tips.

Cost Breakdown

Horse riding experience involves various costs from equipment rental to transportation. The basic riding session was 900 baht, helmet and boots rental were 50 baht each, and horse treats were 50 baht. Transportation costs included 200 baht (with tip) for the journey there and 250 baht for the return trip. While the total cost was considerable, it was well worth it for such a unique experience.

Tips for First-Time Riders

Given the mountain location, plan your round-trip transportation in advance as taxis are hard to find. It's best to visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense sun, and long pants are essential to protect your thighs. While I noticed small bruises on my thighs and experienced some back pain afterward, it was all part of this valuable experience.
